The Siren Shimmer Veil Body Oil by Fable Beauty

Holiday Party Glow: Your Night-Before and Night-Of Routine

The harbor ball is the one night each winter I leave the water. Lanterns along the pier, frost on the ropes, ships creaking in their berths, and a ballroom full of people in velvet who are too shy to dance. So I sing. Just one verse, low and warm, and by the second line the whole room has drifted onto the floor without quite knowing why.

The song gets them there. What keeps them looking is the glow, and that part is no spell at all. Good holiday party beauty is a two-step routine. The night before, you scrub, shave and moisturize so your skin has hours to calm down. The night of, you add shimmer where the light hits, finish your hair, layer your scent and put on lip oil last. Split it that way and you're never shaving in a panic at 6 p.m. or smoothing shimmer over a fresh nick.

Here's What You Need to Know
  • Do the rough work the night before: scrub, then shave, then moisturize. That gives freshly shaved skin a full night to calm down before anything shimmery or scented touches it.
  • The night of, keep it to four moves: shimmer body oil on the high points, hair, perfume on pulse points and clothes, and lip oil last.
  • Shimmer goes where light lands: collarbones, shoulders, the front of your shins. A few drops cover a lot, so start small.
  • Skip shimmer and perfume on any spot that's stinging, red or nicked. Patch test anything new a day or two ahead, not an hour before you leave.

Your holiday party beauty timeline at a glance

Most party prep advice stops at your face. Party outfits show shoulders, arms and legs, and that's where people run out of time. Here's the whole plan.

When Step Time it takes Why then
2 to 3 days before Patch test anything new 1 minute, then wait You want to find a reaction on Tuesday, not in the car
Night before Sugar scrub in the shower 5 minutes Lifts dry flakes so shimmer goes on smooth
Night before Shave 10 minutes Skin has the whole night to settle
Night before Moisturize, then sleep 3 minutes Hydrated skin reflects light better by morning
Night of, 90 minutes out Shower (no scrub), hair 30 to 45 minutes Hair needs the most time to set
Night of, 30 minutes out Shimmer body oil 5 minutes plus 5 to dry Goes on before the dress, after the hair
Night of, 10 minutes out Perfume 1 minute Sits on top of the oil
Walking out the door Lip oil 30 seconds Last thing on, first thing to touch up

The night before: scrub, shave, moisturize

Everything rough happens tonight, so tomorrow is only the pretty part. One scrub is plenty; don't scrub again the next day.

  1. Warm shower, about 5 minutes in. Let the water soften your skin and hair before you touch a razor.
  2. Scrub. Take a small scoop of sugar scrub and massage it over your legs, arms, elbows and knees in slow circles for about a minute per area. Light pressure. You're polishing, not sanding. Rinse well. My Siren Magical Sugar Scrub is sugar in safflower seed oil with vitamin E, so it leaves a soft layer behind. If you're new to scrubs, the full how-to is in how to use a sugar scrub.
  3. Shave after the scrub, not before. Use a sharp blade, a slick layer of shave oil or cream, and go slow over knees and ankles. A few drops of Siren Shave Oil Serum gives the razor glide, and you can use a drop after shaving too.
  4. Pat dry and moisturize within a few minutes. Body frosting, lotion or a plain body oil all work. This is the step that makes tomorrow's skin look plump instead of papery.
  5. Go to bed. I'm serious. Sleep does more for your glow than anything in this post.

In a cold, dry December, one night of moisture isn't always enough. If your legs are already flaky and tight, start moisturizing every night the week before. The winter skin care routine for your body covers that in detail.

A note on freshly shaved skin

Shaving takes off a thin layer of skin along with the hair, and some people get redness, little bumps or ingrown hairs afterward. That's exactly why shaving goes the night before. Any pinkness usually settles overnight. Don't put shimmer, perfume or anything with fragrance on skin that's stinging, red or nicked, even if the party is in an hour. Leave that patch bare and nobody will notice. See a dermatologist if razor bumps or ingrown hairs keep coming back, get painful or look infected.

The night of: how to glow for a party

This is the fun half. Four moves, in this order, and none of them take long.

1. Shimmer body oil, placed where light lands

Shimmer works because it bounces light, so put it where light naturally hits you: the tops of your shoulders, your collarbones, down the front of your shins and along the outer arm. Skip the inner arms, underarms and anywhere that rubs against fabric all night.

  • Start with 3 to 4 drops per leg and 2 per shoulder. You can always add more.
  • Warm it in your palms and press it on, then smooth it in long strokes.
  • Give it about five minutes before you step into your dress or tights.
  • Check under a warm lamp. Party lighting is dim and golden, so subtle at the mirror reads beautifully there.

My Siren Shimmer Veil Body Oil is a lightweight, non-greasy oil with mica for the shimmer, plus coconut, almond, avocado and argan oils and vitamin E. It's 1.7 fl oz (50 ml) for $30. It works on every skin tone. On deeper skin it reads as a warm sheen, on fair skin as a soft pearl. Patch test it a couple of days before, like anything new.

2. Hair

Do your hair before the body oil so you're not running oily hands through it later. For soft, piece-y waves, mist damp hair with Siren Sea Salt Hair Tonic, then air-dry, braid or diffuse. For a sleek look, smooth a few drops of Siren Hair Oil Elixir through your mid-lengths and ends on dry hair. Curly and coily hair usually wants the oil on damp hair to hold definition. Fine hair needs only one or two drops, and keep it away from the roots.

3. Scent, layered on top

Spray perfume after the body oil. Scent tends to hang on longer over moisturized skin than over bare, dry skin. Go for your neck, the inside of your wrists and behind your knees, then one spritz on your hair ends or the lining of your coat.

My Siren Perfume is Brazilian Beaches: pistachio almond, jasmine and sandalwood. It's a 100 ml spray, phthalate-free and made in the USA, at $60.

4. Lip oil, last out the door

Lip oil goes on last because it's the first thing you'll touch up. Fable Beauty's lip oil is a 6 ml, non-sticky gloss with avocado, apricot kernel and castor oils, squalane and vitamin E, so it won't glue your hair to your face when you're dancing. I don't have my own shade, so I borrow from the Lip Oil Best Sellers Bundle ($49.99). Tuck one tube in your clutch.

Holiday party beauty by outfit

Where the shimmer goes depends on what you're wearing.

Outfit Shimmer placement Watch out for
Strapless or off-shoulder dress Shoulders, collarbones, upper back Neckline transfer, so keep 2 inches clear of the fabric edge
Short dress, bare legs Front of shins, tops of knees Fresh shave nicks around ankles and knees
Sheer tights Shins only, fully dry before tights go on Too much oil can make tights slip
Long sleeves, high neck Collarbone peek and the backs of your hands Less is more here, one or two drops
Suit or jumpsuit Collarbones and wrists Light fabrics like white silk show oil, so dry time matters

FAQ

How do I make my skin glow for a party?

Exfoliate and moisturize the night before so your skin is smooth and hydrated, then add a light-reflecting product the night of. A shimmer body oil on your collarbones, shoulders and shins catches the light without looking like glitter. Drink water and get some sleep too, because no oil hides a 2 a.m. bedtime.

Should I shave the night before or the day of a party?

The night before works best for most people. It gives your skin hours to settle, so any redness is gone and you can put on shimmer and perfume without a sting. If your hair grows back fast, do a quick touch-up on just your underarms the day of.

Can I put body oil on right after shaving?

A plain moisturizer or shave oil is fine on freshly shaved skin if it doesn't sting. Save shimmer and anything with fragrance for skin that's calm, ideally the next day. If a spot is red, bumpy or nicked, leave it bare.

Will shimmer body oil get on my dress?

A little transfer is possible with any shimmer oil, especially on tight or dark fabric. Use a few drops, rub it in well and give it about five minutes before you get dressed. Keep it to skin your outfit doesn't cover.

Where should I spray perfume before a party?

Spray your neck, the inside of your wrists and behind your knees, plus one spritz on your clothes or hair ends. Put it on after your body oil, since scent tends to hang on longer over moisturized skin. Don't spray it on freshly shaved underarms or on irritated skin.

One last verse

At the end of the harbor ball, when the lanterns are guttering and the band is packing up, someone always asks me what the song was. I tell them the truth: it was only one verse. The rest was the scrub the night before, the oil on their shoulders and a little perfume on a coat lining. You don't need to sing to pull a room onto the dance floor. You just need to catch the light when you turn.

Every beauty has a story.
